Pitta is fire in motion: sharp, bright, and relentless. It governs all metabolism in the body, digestion, absorption, assimilation, vision, and even cognition. Formed by fire and water, it fuels your inner drive, your clarity of thought, and powers the transformation of everything you take in, from food to sensations and ideas.

When Pitta is balanced, it shows up as strength, focus, courage, great energy, fast metabolism, strong digestion, radiant skin, and the determination to see things through. But when the fire rises unchecked, it boils over into acidity (all over the body, GI tract, even sweat), inflammation (including gastritis, rinitis, all the "itis"), high blood pressure (from emotional root), skin flare-ups, impatience, irritability, and perfectionism that burns you out and scorches everyone around you.

Pittas are also the type who, when they finally ‘rest,’ turn it into a project, sometimes by listening to a podcast about productivity or brainstorming their next big idea. Pro tip: real rest doesn’t need a performance review.

Now, the fun stuff:

How to Keep Pitta Balanced:

🏖️ Stay cool. Literally and emotionally

Pittas overheat easily, so avoid too much sun, hot yoga, or competitive and frustrating situations that spike your inner fire. Schedule breaks, go swimming, enjoy moonlight walks, and learn to actually relax.

🌿 Favor cooling, calming foodsT

Think sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes: fresh fruits, leafy greens, cucumber, zucchini, coconut, and a splash of cilantro. Cooling herbs and spices like coriander, fennel, and cardamom are your friends.

🍵 Drink cooling teas

Rose, jasmine, chamomile, mint, lavender, lemon balm, and hibiscus are especially soothing for Pitta. They cool the body, calm inflammation, ease irritability, and support relaxation.

🔥 Foods to avoid

Reduce ultra processed, hot, heating, spicy, oily, and fried foods, as well as excess alcohol, caffeine, red meat, onions, garlic, and sour or fermented items. These all throw gasoline on your inner fire.

🍽️ Meal planning

Space your meals and try not to snack all the time. Giving your digestion a break helps balance appetite, reduce that infamous Pitta “hangriness,” and keeps energy steady throughout the day.

🧘🏽 Practice moderation and detachment

Pitta loves control, competition, and achievement, but those same qualities can eat you alive. Build rituals that help you soften: meditation, restorative yoga, chanting, time in nature. Not everything needs to be optimized, ranked, or conquered.

💨 Pranayama for Pitta

Cooling and calming breathwork like Sitkari and Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) help release heat and restore balance. ⚠️ Always check with a qualified teacher before starting new practices if you have medical conditions.

🎨 Stimulate joy, not judgment

Pittas thrive when they let go of constant evaluation and control. Choose activities that let you color outside the lines: dance like nobody’s watching, doodle without a plan, or try something playful with no goal in mind. Creativity doesn’t need a spreadsheet; it needs space to flow. Yes, even if your inner perfectionist cringes.

To a balanced life!
